Complete System Solution: Page 3

In wind power plants, the connection coupling between the gearbox and the generator must be maintenance-free over a service lifetime of at least 20 years; furthermore, it must transmit reliably and compensate for large shaft misalignments.

The overload protection integrated in the coupling intermediate sleeve is based on frictional locking. An optimised, organic friction system absorbs unpermittedly high torque impacts. In this way, the high requirements regarding release accuracy and number of overload cases are fulfilled. The friction partners are characterised by stable and reproducible release behaviour. The tolerance level is +/- 15% over 1000 overload cases. In case of overload, the slip process occurs within the coupling and not on the gearbox or generator shaft; therefore, the overload module is calibrated at the place of manufacture. This excludes the possibility of adjustment errors during installation.

No hydraulic installation tools are required for installation and de-installation of the coupling. By using special clamping sets, the tightening torques can be kept within limits that can be managed without any problems. The intermediate sleeve between the gearbox-side brake disk and the generator-side hub can be dismantled without moving the gearbox or generator radially. An intermediate sleeve made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic provides electric insulation for the generator gearbox; therefore, leakage currents can be ruled out. In contrast to elastomer couplings, the wind power module based on the ROBA-DS disk pack coupling does not require maintenance work over the entire service lifetime if used under normal wind power plant operating conditions.
