Fail-safe: Page 3

- If a rope breaks on a lifting platform, eight ROBA-linearstop safety brakes engage simultaneously and brake the entire system reliably within 35 ms.
Most other safety brakes in the tried and tested ROBA-stop product range by mayr power transmission release electromagnetically. There were several reasons for selecting hydraulic or pneumatic activation on the linear brake. For one thing, braking forces can be achieved using devices of the same constructional size which are far higher than on electromagnetically operated brakes. For another thing, oil hydraulics or compressed air is already available in most of the machines and systems in which the ROBA -linearstop can be used. This means no extra effort is required for producing a suitable supply of power. First and foremost, the ROBA-linearstop is a backlash-free holding brake. It can however also brake the carriage whilst it is moving; for example after a gravity-induced acceleration during power failure or EMERGENCYSTOP.
The technology in detail:
Hydraulic ROBA -linearstop safety brakes are available in three sizes with 10, 20 and 30 kN holding force. The pneumatic variant in three sizes have holding forces of 500, 2500 and 6000 N. Both type series are spring-loaded closed in deactivated conditions. The amount of braking force can be set via the spring pre-tension. Unless the customer requests otherwise, the brakes are set to the maximum force at the site of manufacture. The brakes are controlled via an electrically-switched 3/2-way valve. In order to achieve the shortest possible engagement times, the return line for hydraulic control should have as large a cross-section as possible. No choke valves are to be installed in this area, and the lines between the brake and the valve are to be kept as short as possible. On the pneumatic variant, we recommend the use of a quick-action ventilating valve in order to minimise the brake engagement times.
