Protection and Safety without Compromises: Page 6

Fig. 8: The collision force depends on the speed and the torque adjustment of the torque limiting clutch.

Test series with different collision speeds, each with or without a torque limiting clutch, have shown that the collision force is influenced by a number of parameters. In detail, these interdependencies can be seen as follows: The collision force depends strongly on the speed, but also on the torque adjustment of the clutch, see Fig. 8. This is especially noticeable for low speeds. At high speeds, however, the influence of the torque set on the torque limiting clutch on the collision forces decreases. This means that it is important to choose the correct torque limiting clutch with the optimum torque adjustment close to the maximum system operating torque for each application.

Taking the tests in account, an analytical calculation model was developed, which makes it possible to make clear statements on the expected collision forces based on detailed data regarding rigidity and mass distribution of the machine.

Conclusion:

All described possibilities for collision protection, such as motor current measurement, software-based systems or KoBaSiS can be used for the improvement of the total system under adequate basic conditions. With rising collision speed and increased rigidity of the servo axes and the machines which are equipped with these devices, the systems mentioned here reach their limits. Mechanical torque limiting clutches, as for example the EAS-Compact clutch shown in Fig. 9, however, are able to clearly show their advantages. As market leader, mayr power transmission offers a very wide-ranging and well-developed modular construction system for EAS-torque limiting clutches, which provides the optimum clutch for nearly every application. The product range reflects 50 years of experience and know-how in the development, production and implementation of torque limiting clutches in all power
transmission applications.
