Achieving over 130 years of successful industrial operation is a significant milestone. Interestingly, our customer, Marelli Motori, actually predates us by six years. Yet, the Italian electric motor and generator manufacturer, part of the Langley Holdings Group, consistently demonstrates its commitment to remaining at the cutting edge.
Marelli Motori is currently collaborating on the construction of a robust electromechanical frequency converter designed for demanding, high-standard applications. This impressive system is engineered to convert the incoming mains power frequency from 50Hz to the required 60Hz, a process achieved purely electromechanically and eliminating the reliance on sensitive and vulnerable electronic components.
The operational principle involves a 50Hz synchronous motor, initially started by a 50Hz pony motor, which drives a secondary synchronous machine that acts as the generator, delivering the precise 60Hz output. All machines operate at 11kV.
Securing the connection between the two main 5MW "heavyweights" is a size 4 EAS® HT safety coupling. Furthermore, a size 11000 ROBA® DS heavy-duty coupling is integrated to effectively compensate for shaft misalignments. This setup is vital for protecting the expensive synchronous units against severe overload damage, such as a standstill resulting from short circuit transients.
