Magnetic clutches: Safely transmit and limit torque

Magnetic clutches transmit and limit torques contactlessly through magnetic force or frictionally via friction lining – reliably and precisely. Depending on the design, they fulfill various tasks: from positioning tasks to switchable torque transmission to torque limitation.

mayr® power transmission offers two designs: electromagnetic clutches for switchable torque transmission in process-controlled drives, and hysteresis clutches for constant torque limitation with defined slip.

  • Precisely controllable torque transmission and reliable torque limitation
  • Defined overload protection for drive lines
  • Suited for dynamic applications and high switching frequency

Magnetic clutches at a glance

Magnetic clutches from mayr® power transmission are reliable drive elements. They ensure safe torque transmission and interrupt this transmission either in response to a switching signal or when the specified limit torque is reached, depending on the design and operating principle.

Hysteresis clutches – continuous torque with slip

Hysteresis clutches from mayr® power transmission operate contactlessly and are therefore wear-free and free from contamination caused by abrasion. They enable precise torque limitation. During overload, the torque remains constant. The clutch operates in a load-holding manner, ensuring reliable operating processes in bottling plants, for example, or when unwinding films, yarns, and similar materials.

Electromagnetic clutches – switchable torque transmission

With electromagnetic clutches from mayr® power transmission, you can precisely control or limit torque transmission. The electromagnetic clutches of the ROBATIC® series ensure permanently reliable connecting and disconnecting of input and output. They enable uniform cycles and precise positioning over the entire service life.

Switchable and adjustable torque limiters interrupt torque transmission during overload. The torque to be protected can be adjusted during operation. In addition, they can be switched electromagnetically.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about magnetic clutches

Magnetic clutches are used wherever reliable, targeted torque transmission is required or the transmitted torque must be safely limited. Electromagnetic clutches are suited, for example, for positioning tasks or process control, the switchable and adjustable torque limiters reliably protect machines and systems against overload damage, and the load-holding hysteresis clutches limit torque transmission contactlessly to an adjustable limit torque.

Depending on the type of construction and operating principle, magnetic clutches are at least low-maintenance or even maintenance-free.

Magnetic clutches are clutches whose operating principle is based on magnetic force.

Fundamentally, any clutch that operates by means of magnetic force is a magnetic clutch. Within this group, there are various operating principles and designs. The portfolio of mayr® power transmission includes electromagnetic clutches, in which an energized coil generates a magnetic field that attracts a rotor and thereby closes the clutch. When torque transmission needs to be interrupted, the current is switched off and the clutch opens by spring force.

Hysteresis clutches belong to the load-holding torque limiters. They transmit torque contactlessly via magnetized surfaces up to the continuously adjustable limit torque. Once this is reached, the clutch slips, so that only this maximum desired torque is transmitted.

With switchable and adjustable mechanical torque limiters, mayr® offers an additional operating principle. These torque limiters operate similarly to purely mechanical overload clutches. However, the disengagement torque is not set by preloaded springs but by an electrically generated magnetic field. This magnetic field can be adjusted via the supplied current during operation, which also changes the disengagement torque. The clutch can therefore be continuously adjusted at any time and can also be switched.

When selecting the optimal magnetic clutch, it is essential to choose a manufacturer that brings extensive application experience and proven reliability. Only such a partner can guarantee the required safety across the full spectrum of applications. A broad product portfolio is a key factor here: it enables the provider to deliver the technically and economically best solution for the specific application. The profile of an ideal partner is rounded out by competent service, experienced personnel, and digital tools such as product configurators or validation tools that efficiently support the engineering process.

For hysteresis clutches, the limit torque at which the clutch slips and thereby limits the torque is continuously adjusted using an adjusting ring.

For switchable and adjustable electromagnetic torque limiters, the release torque is set electromagnetically. An energized coil generates a magnetic field whose strength can be regulated via the applied current. The stronger the magnetic field, the higher the disengagement torque. With these clutches, the disengagement torque can be continuously adjusted during operation, and they can also be switched electromagnetically.

For electromagnetic pole-face clutches such as the ROBATIC®, there is no release torque, as these are not torque-limiting overload clutches.
