The term safety brakes refers to the fail-safe principle: The brakes are applied in de-energized condition.
If the power is turned off or unexpectedly fails due to technical problems, our brakes apply by means of spring force, which ensures reliable and safe braking of machines and systems in any position.
mayr® provides industrial, elevator, and stage brakes in a wide variety of designs, covering a broad spectrum of braking torques and fields of application.
mayr® safety brakes fall into two main categories: Elevator and stage brakes featuring patented noise damping, as well as industrial brakes designed for applications ranging from medical robots to port cranes.
Quiet, reliable, and standard-compliant: noise-damped safety brakes for drives in elevators and stages protect both people and equipment.
mayr® industrial brakes ensure reliable machine and system movements, whether during a power failure, emergency stop, or normal operation – application-optimized, safe, and innovative.
Keep your machines and systems safely and reliably held in any position with mayr® power transmission safety brakes. The applications are many and varied:
Every machine or system moves masses or loads that need to be safely and reliably braked or held. Machine manufacturers are ultimately responsible for ensuring the safety of their equipment. And it is the duty of the design engineers to make this happen – especially when it comes to protecting people.
mayr® power transmission safety brakes ensure in every scenario that people and equipment are reliably protected, and that designers can comply with standards and regulations.
Our broad portfolio of braking systems offers a cost-effective, technically optimized solution for every application.
Safety brakes are essential components that must be carefully selected. Before selecting a safety brake, it’s important to identify the relevant regulatory requirements, for example, which Performance Levels (PLr) according to DIN EN ISO 13849-1 need to be achieved. A technically precise design based on the technical dimensioning of the machine construction is also essential. Armed with this information, you can choose the right brake – we recommend reaching out to reputable manufacturers with a wide range of braking solutions and proven expertise in safety brakes. They should also offer helpful resources such as dimensioning guides, validation tools, technical webinars, and online configurators, which guide users quickly and safely to the right brake. When it comes to safety critical components, it is advisable to contact technical experts at the supplier and seek their guidance.
mayr® power transmission offers, among other things, noise-damped elevator and stage brakes. They correspond to the applicable standards and remain extremely quiet throughout their entire lifetime. The second category is industrial brakes for a wide range of applications, from robotics and mechanical engineering to renewable energy generation.
All safety brakes from mayr® power transmission follow the fail-safe principle, meaning they are applied when de-energized. This means that even in the event of a power failure or faults in the brake’s power supply, safety is guaranteed at all times.
mayr® power transmission safety brakes are found across over 60 industry sectors and areas of application. They are used wherever masses or loads need to be braked, brought to a standstill, or securely held in position. Industry sectors where mayr® power transmission brakes are used include, but are not limited to:
Elevator and stage technology
General mechanical engineering and machine tools
Robotics and automation
Medical technology
Wind power
Crane and hoisting applications
All safety brakes from mayr® power transmission follow the fail-safe principle, meaning they are applied when de-energized.
All our safety brakes also have the following features:
Short switching and braking times
Safety-oriented dimensioning
Reliable spring force
Application of basic and established safety principles
100% end-of-line brake inspection
Reliability thanks to many years of field experience
For the safe and reliable monitoring and supply of mayr® safety brakes, there are specialized modules with different functionalities, depending on the application. Optimized for our safety brakes, they guarantee the smooth, dependable, and safe operation of your brakes.
The direct voltage required to open the brakes can be supplied by simple half-wave and bridge rectifiers. ROBA® switch fast acting rectifiers are able to automatically reduce the coil voltage after the brakes are opened (“overexcitation” and/or “power reduction”)
Innovative ROBA® brake-checker modules enable permanent brake monitoring via the sensorless monitoring of the brake condition. The “plus” versions of the ROBA® brake-checker® also feature a fast acting rectifier.
With the ROBA® SBCplus® and the ROBA® torqcontrol, modules are provided to reliably control the safety brakes or adjust the braking torque.
To prevent sparks from forming at the switching contacts, a spark quenching unit is integrated in all of our supply modules. For certain switching configurations, a separate spark quenching unit is required and available.
