Overview of Shaft Couplings 

mayr® power transmission offers a comprehensive range of shaft couplings to connect two shafts backlash-free. The couplings transmit torque in two ways: torsionally rigid or torsionally flexible

Disk Pack Couplings – Torsionally Rigid and High-Performance 

Disk pack couplings are torsionally rigid. They transmit torque precisely, are maintenance-free, and offer performance density. Applications range from industrial and heavy-duty uses (ROBA® DS Steel) to servo drives (ROBA® DS Servo) and test benches (ROBA® DS 9120). 

This design is also referred to as a disk coupling. To avoid confusion with friction disk couplings, the technically correct name “disk pack coupling” is used here. 

Steel Bellows Couplings – Flexible and Space-Saving 

mayr® steel bellows couplings, such as the smartflex®, also transmit torque in a torsionally rigid way thanks to their patented construction. They compensate for axial, angular, and radial misalignment with just a single compensating element. They are ideal for servo drives and high-speed, high-dynamic applications. 

Elastomer Couplings – Vibration-Damping and Insertable 

Torsionally flexible elastomer couplings like the ROBA® ES absorb shaft misalignment while also being vibration damping. Rigidity and damping characteristics can be varied using star-shaped elastomer elements with different Shore hardnesses. The ROBA® ES features a plug-in design, ideal for blind assembly. 

Servo Couplings – Backlash-Free and Precise 

Servo couplings transmit torque precisely and reliably. They are designed for high rotational speeds thanks to low mass moments of inertia and high balance quality. mayr® offers various torsionally rigid and torsionally flexible solutions for servo drives.

When selecting the right shaft coupling, fundamental parameters must be fulfilled first, such as shaft diameter, torque to be transmitted, maximum speed, and the misalignment present. The gap between the shaft ends is another key factor.

The specific application must also be considered: Are there vibrations or shocks that need to be absorbed? Is high precision required? Will the system be exposed to high temperatures?

Armed with these details, design engineers are best advised to consult experienced, reliable manufacturers. These often offer online selection tools, such as product configurators. Any remaining questions can then be clarified in a personal conversation with a technically knowledgeable contact.

mayr® shaft couplings are available in either torsionally rigid or torsionally flexible designs.

Torsionally rigid couplings include disk pack couplings, where a stack of rustproof steel disks serves as the compensating element, and steel bellows couplings, which incorporate a flexible element made of folded sheet metal.

Torsionally flexible couplings use a compensating element made of elastomer to dampen vibrations and shocks. These flexible elements come in a range of Shore hardnesses. This enables rigidity and damping behavior to be specifically adapted to the respective application requirements.

All mayr® shaft couplings are backlash-free.

mayr® shaft couplings are maintenance-free. This is based on the high quality of the individual components. For example, the star-shaped elastomer elements of the torsionally flexible ROBA® ES coupling are resistant to oils and fats and can withstand the specified temperature range. 

Backlash-free, in the context of shaft couplings, means that there is no mechanical movement, especially no rotational movement, between the individual components of the coupling or between the coupling and the shafts.

Backlash-free function is essential, especially in highly dynamic drives or applications requiring high precision. Backlash-free shaft connections also help minimize wear in the drive line.

All shaft couplings from mayr® are essentially backlash-free.
