Los rectificadores de onda completa o puente y los rectificadores de media onda se utilizan para conectar dispositivos de corriente continua a fuentes de alimentación de tensión alterna, por ejemplo, frenos electromagnéticos (serie ROBA-stop®, ROBA® quick), embragues electromagnéticos (ROBATIC®), electroimanes, electroválvulas, contactores, motores de corriente continua con protección contra arranque accidental, etc. Además de rectificar la tensión alterna de entrada, se limitan los picos de tensión que se producen al desconectar cargas inductivas y que pueden dañar el aislamiento y los contactos, y se reduce la carga de contacto.
