More than just elevator brakes

mayr® power transmission at the Interlift 2023
More than just elevator brakes

mayr® power transmission has been in business as an independent family company for more than 125 years. A glance at the company history reveals that tradition and innovation go hand in hand here and that  stability and reliability are central component of the corporate philosophy. This also becomes evident in the strategy for elevator brakes. Not only are the products safe and reliable, but the company also maintains a strong delivery performance in times of crisis. At Interlift 2023 in Augsburg, the global market leader will be showcasing its innovative elevator brakes (in Hall 7, Booth 7038).

Day after day, brakes manufactured by mayr® power transmission from Mauerstetten (Germany) provide reliable protection in countless elevators all around the globe. No matter where people are moved in elevators – whether in skyscrapers, in shopping centres or residential buildings, in hospitals, at airports or on ships – the brakes guarantee the safety of passengers at all times. They stand for safety that does not permit compromises.

At mayr® power transmission, the best products with uncompromising quality means the integrity of the values safety, reliability and innovation across the entire company: From the initial offer right up to the on-site Aftersales Service. Worldwide, at all the subsidiaries and representative offices. This philosophy allowed mayr® power transmission to develop from a simple, small tradesman’s business into the global market leader in the area of mechanical power transmission technology.

“Safety matters not only in thinking, but also in doing.”

The company's history begins in 1897. Back then, the company was founded by Christian Mayr (the great-great-grandfather of today's CEO and Managing Partner Ferdinand Mayr) as a carpenter’s workshop specialising in mill structures in Kaufbeuren (Germany). Since then, the company has overcome many crises. And even now, despite working through the Corona crisis and challenges posed by the war in Ukraine, it is evident that the reliability and stability policy is paying off. “Tradition and innovation are the supporting pillars which have guaranteed our stability for generations”, was the firm belief of senior boss Fritz Mayr, who passed away in January. “In a world that is becoming increasingly fast-moving and uncertain, this means reliability and long-term security. Secure workplaces on the one hand, but of course our products also stand for safety and reliabilty. So in other words, the topic of ‘safety’ shapes not only our thinking but also our actions.” And Ferdinand Mayr further expands on this thought: “Our strategic alignment now ensures stable supplies. In addition to a high level of vertical range of manufacture, local supply chains are crucial here. This means we achieve a strong delivery performance even in volatile times.”

No alternative to quality brakes

The globalization of the market for elevator drives, the intense competition and the associated problems of copying mean that in recent years there has also been enormous competitive pressure in the area of safety-critical components such as elevator brakes. Where in the past there was still a clear commitment to reliability and premium quality, today market participants often mention price first in discussions.

However, the rapid developments being made conceal major potential risks. Due to young market participants without much experience offering products cheaply, the situation has changed fundamentally. Particularly in the area of gearless belt drives, which are currently a trend, reliable elevator brakes from experienced manufacturers are a must. After all, low-cost brakes that require compromises in terms of the materials used and the safety present an incalculable risk.

This is counteracted by the strategy of mayr® power transmission. “We are in a position to offer highly cost-effective, yet reliable solutions,” explains Johann Eberle, CSO at the brake manufacturer from Mauerstetten and active in the industry for over 30 years. “As market leaders, we produce in large quantities and are able to make use of the appropriate field experience. We have put a large number of elevator brakes onto the market over many years, and are aware of the challenges involved.”

The only global player in the field of elevator brakes

mayr® power transmission offers customized brake solutions for the branch and is constantly developing them further. In addition, the company's wide positioning means that it is in a position to cover all requirements.  An important element in the strategy of the market leader is also the participation in various international committees and associations, in particular for example in the important Chinese market.  The international positioning with three independent production plants is another decisive factor. mayr® quality means 'quality made by mayr®’, independent of the location.  At the subsidiaries in Poland and China the same quality standards apply as in Germany. The company Quality Management System there has been certified in accordance with the ISO 9001 in the same way as at the headquarters in Mauerstetten.
